Bernedoodle vs. Goldendoodle: Which Is Right for You?

Bernedoodle vs. Goldendoodle: Which Is Right for You? - Country Lane Doodles blog

Bernedoodles and Goldendoodles are the two doodles Utah families ask us about most, and they're more different than the names suggest. We raise both — Bernedoodles now, and Goldendoodles starting in Summer 2027 — so here's an honest comparison, without the sales pitch.

    The short version

    • Choose a Bernedoodle if you want a calm, devoted dog who bonds deeply with their own family, you love the tri-color look, and you'd like a smaller dog — ours are micro Bernedoodles, around 8 to 22 pounds.
    • Choose a Goldendoodle if you want a dog who's friendly with everyone, easy to train for a first-time owner, and happy to be busy — and you have room for a bigger dog than our micro Bernedoodles.

Both are affectionate family dogs. Both need grooming, training, and company. Neither does well left alone all day.

    Where they come from

Both breeds are half Poodle. The difference is the other half:

    • Bernedoodle: Bernese Mountain Dog × Poodle. The Bernese brings a calm, gentle, loyal temperament and the classic black, white, and rust markings.
    • Goldendoodle: Golden Retriever × Poodle. The Golden brings an easygoing, eager-to-please, famously sociable nature.

The Poodle half brings intelligence and the low-shedding coat. How much Poodle is in the mix depends on the generation — our generations guide explains F1, F1b, and beyond.

    Temperament

Bernedoodles tend to be goofy and affectionate at home, and a little more reserved with strangers. They're deeply attached to their people — wonderful for families who are around a lot, harder for families who aren't. As puppies they can show a stubborn streak, which responds to patience and consistency, not force.

Goldendoodles tend to love everyone they meet — guests, kids, the mail carrier. They're eager to please, which makes training straightforward, and it's why they're so often chosen as therapy and service prospects. The trade-off is energy and a need for company; a bored Goldendoodle will find their own entertainment.

Individual puppies vary more than breed averages suggest. That's one reason we match families to puppies based on personality, not only on markings.

    Size

Both breeds come in many sizes, depending on the Poodle parent:

    • Our Bernedoodles are micro: F1b and F1bb crosses with mini Poodle sires, typically finishing around 8 to 22 pounds depending on the litter. Our micro Bernedoodle guide covers what that means.
    • Our Goldendoodles, from our Golden Retriever moms Nola and Nova, will be F1 crosses — noticeably bigger than our micro Bernedoodles. Exact size depends on which sire we pair with each girl, and we'll publish each litter's expected adult weight before reservations open.

If you live in an apartment, travel often, or have size limits at home, that difference matters more than anything else on this list.

    Coat, shedding, and grooming

Both breeds usually have a low-shedding coat, especially in later generations with more Poodle. Neither is truly hypoallergenic — no dog is. Our post on whether Bernedoodles are hypoallergenic explains why.

Grooming is similar for both: brushing several times a week, and a professional groom every 6 to 8 weeks. A curlier coat sheds less but mats faster. The main difference is size — a micro Bernedoodle is quicker and cheaper to groom than a bigger Goldendoodle.

Looks differ too. Bernedoodles come in tri-color, phantom, merle, and more. Goldendoodles are usually cream, apricot, gold, or red. Our coat types guide shows the range.

    Energy and exercise

    • Bernedoodles: moderate. Around 30 to 60 minutes a day plus some brain games, and happy to snuggle the rest of the time.
    • Goldendoodles: moderate to high. They want daily walks and play, and they love a job — fetch, hiking, swimming, training games.

    Health and lifespan

Both crosses tend to live longer than their purebred non-Poodle parent. The Bernese Mountain Dog is a short-lived breed; Bernedoodles, especially smaller ones, often live 12 to 15 years. Goldendoodles commonly live 10 to 15 years.

Every mixed breed can inherit problems from both sides, which is why testing the parents matters more than the breed you choose. Hips, elbows, eyes, and breed-specific genetic conditions should all be screened before any pairing. You can see our parents' testing on our parent dogs page, and what our health guarantee covers.
