Micro Bernedoodles: What "Micro" Really Means and How Big They Get - Country Lane Doodles blog

"Micro" gets used loosely in the doodle world, and it's one of the first words families ask us about. Here's what it actually means at Country Lane Doodles, how small these puppies really finish, and what to think about before choosing one.

    What "micro" actually means

Micro isn't an official size class. There's no registry standard behind it the way there is for a breed. It's a word breeders use for doodles that finish smaller than a mini — generally under about 25 pounds, and often in the teens.

Size comes from the pairing, not the label. A micro Bernedoodle is usually produced by breeding back to a small Poodle, which is why generation matters so much:

    • F1 — Bernese Mountain Dog × Poodle. Usually the largest, since half the genetics come from a big breed.
    • F1b — F1 Bernedoodle × Poodle. Smaller, curlier, and lower-shedding than an F1.
    • F1bb — F1b × Poodle. Smaller again, and the most Poodle-like coat of the three.

Our micro litters are F1b and F1bb pairings, with mini Poodle sires and small Bernedoodle moms. You can read more in our guide to doodle generations.

How big do they actually get?

Our micro Bernedoodle litters are expected to mature somewhere between roughly 8 and 22 pounds, depending on the pairing. Each litter on our available puppies page lists its own expected adult weight range, because the honest answer differs from litter to litter.

A word about those numbers: they're estimates, not guarantees. We base them on the parents' weights, the generation, and how previous litters from similar pairings matured. Puppies are living animals, and some finish above or below the range. Any breeder who promises you an exact adult weight is telling you something they can't know.

If a hard size ceiling matters for your housing, your travel plans, or a breed restriction where you live, tell us before you apply. We'd rather point you toward the right litter — or tell you honestly that we don't have one — than have a puppy outgrow your situation.

    Coat and shedding

The Poodle in the pairing is what brings the low-shedding coat. F1b and F1bb puppies tend to have curlier, denser coats that shed very little, which is why families with mild allergies often look for them.

No dog is truly hypoallergenic. People react to dander and saliva proteins, not hair, and every dog produces both. What a low-shedding coat does is keep less hair, and the dander attached to it, moving around your house. If someone in your family has significant allergies, spend time around a similar adult dog before committing.

Curlier coats also need more upkeep — brushing several times a week and professional grooming every 6 to 8 weeks. Our coat types guide covers what to expect from each.

    Small dogs are still dogs

A 15-pound doodle needs the same things a 50-pound one does: training, structure, exercise, and socialization. Small dogs get carried more, corrected less, and socialized later, which is exactly how a confident puppy turns into a reactive adult.

Micro Bernedoodles do have real practical advantages. They fit apartments and condos. Many airlines allow them in-cabin. They're easier on aging joints and easier for children to handle safely. They just aren't a different species — plan on the same first-year commitment as any puppy.

Health testing matters more, not less, at this size

Breeding for small size can concentrate problems if it's done carelessly. Every one of our breeding dogs is genetically health tested through Embark or an equivalent lab, and results are reviewed before we plan any pairing. You can see each parent's testing on our parent dogs page.

Every puppy also goes home with a veterinary exam, age-appropriate vaccinations, deworming, a microchip, and our one-year health guarantee.

How our micro litters are raised

Our puppies are raised inside our home in Erda, Utah, following Puppy Culture and Empowered Breeder protocols:

    • Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) and Early Scent Introduction (ESI) from days 3 to 16
    • Sound desensitization — vacuums, doorbells, thunderstorms, everyday household noise
    • Age-appropriate socialization with people, surfaces, and handling
    • Early crate and potty-training foundations before go-home day

That early work is why our families often tell us their puppy settled faster than they expected. It doesn't replace training at home — it gives you a puppy who starts from a calmer baseline.

Is a micro Bernedoodle right for your family?

They tend to suit families who want a smaller companion with a low-shedding coat and a people-focused temperament, and who are ready for regular grooming and consistent early training. They're a poor fit if you need a guaranteed adult weight, want a low-maintenance coat, or are hoping for a dog who can be left alone for long stretches.

If you're weighing it up, our Bernedoodle breed guide goes deeper on temperament and care, and you can always ask Sara a question — no application needed.
