Doodle Generations: F1, F1b, F2 & Multigen
Understanding Doodle generations helps you choose the right coat type, shedding level, and allergy-friendliness for your family. Here's everything you need to know. ๐พ
What Do F1, F1b, F2, and Multigen Mean?
Doodle generations are labeled with "F" (filial) numbers that tell you how many generations removed a puppy is from the original purebred parents โ typically a Poodle and another breed like a Golden Retriever or Bernese Mountain Dog. The letter "b" stands for "backcross," meaning the Doodle was bred back to a Poodle.
These labels aren't just breeder jargon โ they directly impact your puppy's coat, shedding, size predictability, and how allergy-friendly they are likely to be.
First Generation
50% Poodle + 50% Other Breed
The classic Doodle. First-generation crosses offer the most "hybrid vigor" โ the health benefits of genetic diversity. Coat types vary most in F1s: wavy, curly, or occasionally straighter. Shedding is typically light to moderate.
First Generation Backcross
75% Poodle + 25% Other Breed
An F1 Doodle bred back to a Poodle. This increases the odds of a curly, low-shedding, allergy-friendly coat. F1b Doodles are the most popular choice for families with allergies. Their coats need regular grooming but shed very little.
Second Generation
F1 + F1 (or multigen)
Two F1 Doodles bred together. F2 coats are the most unpredictable โ you can get everything from very curly (Poodle-like) to straighter (like the other breed). Reputable breeders typically move toward multigen programs for more predictable traits.
Multigen
F3 and beyond
Multigen Doodles are produced by breeding Doodles to Doodles (F1b to F1b, F2 to F2, etc.) over several generations. With careful selection, breeders can produce more predictable coats, temperaments, and sizes while maintaining low-shedding, allergy-friendly traits.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Trait | F1 Doodle | F1b Doodle | F2 Doodle | Multigen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Poodle % | 50% | 75% | Varies | Varies (often high) |
| Other Breed % | 50% | 25% | Varies | Varies |
| Coat Type | Wavy to curly (some straight) | Mostly curly | Highly variable | Predictable with careful breeding |
| Shedding | Light to moderate | Very low | Unpredictable | Low to very low |
| Allergy-Friendly | Good for mild allergies | Best for allergies | Unpredictable | Excellent when selected for |
| Grooming Needs | Moderate | Higher (more Poodle-like) | Varies | Moderate to high |
| Hybrid Vigor | Strongest | Moderate | Reduced | Reduced but stable |
| Best For | Families wanting the classic blend | Allergy sufferers, low-shedding homes | Experienced doodle owners | Families wanting predictable traits |
Coat Types by Generation
Not all Doodle coats are created equal. Here's what you can typically expect from each generation:
F1 Coats โ The "Happy Medium"
Most F1 Doodles have a soft, wavy coat that's easy to maintain with regular brushing. Some may lean more curly (more Poodle-like) and others straighter (more like the other parent breed). If you're okay with light shedding and want that classic Doodle look, an F1 is a wonderful choice.
F1b Coats โ The Allergy-Friendly Favorite
F1b Doodles typically inherit a curlier, denser coat from their Poodle grandparent. This means very minimal shedding but more frequent grooming โ usually every 6โ8 weeks with a professional, plus daily brushing to prevent matting. For families with allergies, this is often the safest bet.
F2 Coats โ The Wild Card
Because F2 puppies inherit genes from two F1 parents (who are already mixed), coat outcomes are the most unpredictable. You might get a litter with everything from tight Poodle curls to a straighter, more retriever-style coat. Experienced breeders usually don't produce F2 Doodles unless they're working toward a carefully planned multigen program.
Multigen Coats โ The Predictable Pick
Multigen Doodles are bred from Doodle parents over multiple generations. With thoughtful pairing and coat testing, breeders can produce litters with very consistent coat types โ often soft, curly, and low-shedding. This makes multigen Doodles a great choice for families who want a specific look and allergy-friendly traits.
What About Multigen Doodles?
Multigen (short for multigenerational) refers to Doodles that are at least F3 or beyond โ meaning both parents are Doodles themselves, not one purebred parent. While F1 and F1b Doodles are created by crossing a Poodle with another breed, multigen Doodles come from established Doodle lines.
Multigen programs are popular among experienced breeders because they allow more control over traits. By selecting parent dogs with proven coat genetics, temperament, and health, breeders can produce puppies that are more predictable than F2s while still retaining the beloved Doodle personality.
Common Multigen Labels
- F2b: F2 bred back to a Poodle (often 62.5% Poodle)
- F3: F2 bred to F2 or another multigen Doodle
- Multigen: Any generation beyond F3 with two Doodle parents
Why Choose Multigen?
- More predictable coat type and texture
- Consistent size and temperament
- Excellent option for allergy-sensitive homes
- Often the foundation of specialized Doodle lines
Keep in mind: not all multigen Doodles are equal. A well-bred multigen comes from health-tested parents with carefully documented genetics. Always ask your breeder about coat testing, health clearances, and parent pedigrees before choosing a multigen puppy.
Shedding & Allergies: What to Expect
It's important to know: no dog is 100% hypoallergenic. Allergies are triggered by dander (dead skin cells), saliva, and urine โ not just fur. However, dogs that shed less tend to spread less dander around your home.
Here's how each generation typically ranks for allergy-sensitive homes:
- ๐ฅF1b & Multigen: Best options for moderate to severe allergies. The higher Poodle percentage or careful coat selection means less dander and minimal shedding.
- ๐ฅF1: Good for mild allergies. Most F1s shed lightly, but there's more variation โ some individuals may shed more than others.
- ๐ฅF2: Unpredictable. Some F2s are great for allergies; others aren't. If allergies are a concern, work with a breeder who can help you identify the right puppy based on coat type.
We always recommend spending time with a Doodle (or similar Poodle mix) before committing if anyone in your household has allergies.
What Is Hybrid Vigor?
Hybrid vigor (also called heterosis) is the idea that crossbreeding two genetically different purebreds can produce offspring that are healthier and more robust than either parent breed. This is because the puppies inherit a wider variety of genes, reducing the chance of inheriting two copies of the same genetic disorder.
Here's how hybrid vigor plays out across generations:
Strongest hybrid vigor. Maximum genetic diversity from two purebred parents.
Moderate hybrid vigor. Still benefits from crossbreeding, with more predictable coat traits.
Reduced hybrid vigor. As generations progress, traits become more unpredictable.
Reduced but stable. Predictable traits through selective breeding and health testing.
That said, responsible breeding matters more than generation labels. Health-tested parents, careful pairings, and ethical practices are what truly produce healthy puppies โ regardless of whether they're F1, F1b, or multigen.
