The Bernedoodle: A Complete Guide to the Bernese Mountain Dog Poodle Mix
The Bernedoodle is a designer breed created by crossing a Bernese Mountain Dog with a Poodle. Known for their striking tri-color coats, gentle nature, and low-shedding fur, Bernedoodles are quickly becoming one of the most popular doodle breeds for families. 🐾
A Brief History
The Bernedoodle was first intentionally bred in 2003 by Sherry Rupke of SwissRidge Kennels in Canada, combining the loyal, easygoing temperament of the Bernese Mountain Dog with the intelligence and low-shedding coat of the Poodle. The goal was a healthier, longer-lived companion with the beloved tri-color markings of the Bernese.
Today, Bernedoodles come in three main sizes — mini, medium, and standard — and multiple generations (F1, F1B, F2, multigen), giving families a lot of flexibility to find the right fit.

Size & Appearance
Bernedoodles come in several sizes depending on the Poodle parent: Micro Bernedoodles (typically 10–24 lbs), Mini Bernedoodles (25–49 lbs), Medium Bernedoodles (50–70 lbs), and Standard Bernedoodles (70–90+ lbs). Adult size depends on the parents, generation, and individual genetics.
Because Bernedoodles are a mix of the tri-colored Bernese Mountain Dog and the highly varied Poodle, they come in a wonderful range of colors and patterns. Their coats are typically wavy or curly with a soft, plush texture.
Bernedoodle Coat Colors & Patterns
Below is an overview of the colors and patterns Bernedoodles are known for. Not every color will be available in every litter — reach out to see what's expected in our upcoming litters.
Tri-color
The classic and most popular Bernedoodle look — a black base with white markings on the chest, face, paws, and tail tip, plus rust/tan points around the jaw, eyes, and legs. Later generations may show tri-color combinations that include brown, red, apricot, cream, or gray.
Solid Colors
Less common because of the Bernese tri-color genetics, but Bernedoodles can be solid black, white, cream, apricot, red, brown/chocolate, or gray — often with a small white patch on the chest or paws. Solid black is one of the rarer colorings.
Bi-color
Two colors — one dominant with patches of a lighter shade. Common combinations include black & white, black & brown, brown & white, red & white, apricot & white, cream & white, and gray & white.
Merle
A rare, striking marbled pattern. Blue merle is shades of gray marbled with darker patches; red merle is shades of brown. Merle can appear on its own or combined with tri-color markings. Responsible breeders only ever pair a single merle parent with a non-merle to keep puppies healthy.
Phantom
A dominant solid color (usually black) with lighter tan or cream points on the muzzle, eyebrows, chest, legs, and under the tail — following the same pattern as the tri-color but without the white.
Parti
At least 50% white with clear patches of another color — typically black or brown, but any color combination is possible.
Sable
Each hair has a black tip over a lighter base color (often brown or cream), creating a soft, shaded look. Sable often "clears" as puppies mature, leaving the darker shading mostly on the ears and tail.
Brindle
Sometimes called "tiger-striped" — a reddish-brown base with subtle darker stripes running through the coat. In Bernedoodles the brindle pattern is often soft and may only appear on part of the coat.
Note on the fading gene: Bernedoodles can inherit the Poodle "fading" gene, which lightens the coat as the adult coat comes in around 6–10 months. A rich red puppy may soften to apricot, or even cream, over time. It doesn't affect health or personality at all.
A note on adult size: we can give you a thoughtful estimate based on the parents and past litters, but we can't guarantee an exact adult weight. Siblings from the same litter can grow into slightly different sizes.
Hypoallergenic Coat & Grooming
One of the biggest draws of the Bernedoodle is their low-shedding coat. Most Bernedoodles inherit a coat that sheds minimally — especially F1B and multigen Bernedoodles with more Poodle in the mix. Common coat types include:
- •Wavy: The most common — soft, gentle waves that are easy to maintain with regular brushing.
- •Curly: More Poodle-like, very low-shedding, best for allergy sufferers. Needs professional grooming every 6–8 weeks.
- •Straight: More Bernese-influenced, sheds a bit more, still soft and easy to brush.

Exercise & Activity Needs
Bernedoodles are moderately active dogs — playful when it's time to play, and content to snuggle when it's downtime. Plan for at least 30–60 minutes of activity a day, plus mental enrichment like puzzle toys and training games. Standard Bernedoodles love hiking, swimming, and outdoor adventures.
Bernedoodle Health & Lifespan
Bernedoodles are generally healthier and longer-lived than purebred Bernese Mountain Dogs, with an average lifespan of 12–15 years (mini) and 10–13 years (standard). Responsible breeders perform genetic and orthopedic testing before pairing dogs. Common conditions to be aware of include:
- •Hip and elbow dysplasia — screened via OFA evaluations on the parents.
- •Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) — screened through DNA panels.
- •Von Willebrand's disease — a blood-clotting condition screened via DNA testing.
- •Skin allergies — occasional sensitivities; manageable with diet and vet care.

Great for Allergy-Aware Families
While no dog is 100% hypoallergenic, many Bernedoodles produce far less dander than typical dogs. F1B and multigen Bernedoodles tend to be the most allergy-friendly. We always recommend spending time with a Bernedoodle before committing if allergies are a concern.
